Beware of Domain Renewal Solicitations

It is standard practice in small-medium sized businesses for the owner of a company to also be the owner of it’s domain name, and because of this it is important to fill you in on domain renewal solicitation scams.

One of the most prominent domain renewal scams is sent out in the form of snail-mail invoices. These invoices will often state that “failure to comply will mean losing your domain”, and provide a variety of different term-based options for payment and registration. If they’re not as legitimate as they seem, then how do they obtain all of your domain and contact information?

When you purchase a domain, that registration information – which includes domain and hosting registrar information, contact information, whether your site is live or not and more – is entered into a public Whois record. Whois records will also show when a domain is up for expiry.

With that information, the invoices will be sent out close to your domain’s expiration date with the hopes that you’re either aware of the expiry and know you have to pay it, or have completely forgotten and think you need to pay it. If you were to pay this invoice, what you’re really paying is not actually a renewal fee, but a transfer fee which would allow for your domain to be transferred to a different domain provider. In the end, it would cost you a substantially higher annual fee than most domain registrars.

Other domain renewal solicitations may also come through email or via telephone. The best thing to do if you receive a domain renewal solicitation is simply to ignore it. Please remember that you will only receive renewal notices via email directly from your domain registrar, or through an email notification or phone call from your existing provider. If you receive one of these solicitations, and are unsure about it, contact your domain registrar or contact us today, and we’ll be happy to assist you.
